I was in a bit of a daze yesterday after work and wandered around the shopping mall. Quite accidentally I found myself seated at the other Japanese restaurant than I normally go to. They had a 20% discount on all salmon items, which was good. I ordered a Hana Maki (salmon wrapped around a lump of rice and topped with mayonnaise), and Ura Maki (salmon wrapped around a lump of rice wrapped around deep-fried salmon skin). I also nabbed some small salmon maki off the conveyor belt while waiting for my order.
I wanted something hot though, and selected at random the Kamo Miso Yaki (Duck Miso Grill). The burner arrived first and the waiter ceremoniously lit it, and then placed the dish on the flame. The dish was a loose metal sieve in which nestled a large brown leaf. On the leaf were slices of grilled aubergine interspaced with slices of duck meat with a layer of duck fat still attached. The dark brown sauce I assume was miso.
The duck was OMG SO GOOD. Probably due to the fat. The aubergine was fine, especially for sopping up duck fat. What worried me was one of the waitresses walked by while I was eating, looked at the leaf and burner and giggled while hurrying away. I wonder where they got the leaf from – not off the street, I hope….
