Mine was last sunday, G’s was yesterday, so in celebration G&T and J&I went to Speisekammer, the local German restaurant, for dinner. It’s one of our favorite restaurants in the area, but we try not to go too often so we don’t get overloaded on it.
Tonight, I had the potato pancakes and the jaegerschnitzel, which are my favorite dishes there. For dessert, I shared a piece of black forest cake with G. G also had venison oso buco, and started with crab puffs. T had delicious bread dumplings in a mushroom gravy and salmon with a dill sauce. For dessert, T had apple streudel with ice cream. J ordered potatoes with quark sauce, and a giant pork shank, which turned out to be sold out, so, instead, the NY sirloin steak, and for dessert an apple/almond cake.
The really intriguing part of dinner was the glass of absinthe we all shared; none of us had tried it before. The waitress explained that we were to slowly add ice cubes to the glass (which was filled about 1/2″ deep) of the liquor until we felt it was the right cloudiness and consistency. It had a strong scent of anise/licorice, and was about the strongest form of liquor I have ever tasted.
It was delicious, and a great way to celebrate.
